What’s wrong with this picture?
I’m seriously considering dumping Dumas’ full-length masterpiece for the abridged version. Unfortunately, my local library does not appear to carry the abridged version. I decided to look for it on Amazon, and thought while I was there I would read a few reviews to see if there were any strong opinions about reading the abridged v. unabridged editions. One reviewer said, “I loved the beginning of this book… Dumas sets the whole thing up perfectly. It was entertaining, entrawling and a great story.”
On Wednesday, I volunteered in Goose’s classroom. She’s a second grader in a 2nd/3rd grade split. The teacher had me grading math papers while she gave some writing instruction. She was talking to the kids about different ways you can begin a story (e.g. setting, dialogue, action), and provided her own examples of how to begin the same story using these three methods. Her action story start: “Heather and I jumped on our bikes and peddled down the street as fast as we could.”
Last year, DynaGirl’s teacher had “Daily Schedual” posted on the wall. Laminated.
Sigh.

We’ve already discussed what is wrong with this picture, so I won’t ruin it for the rest of ’em! 🙂 I am with you. Errors like that drive me nutso. I mean, an error now and then is understandable…but laminated? Shameful!

That’s a really interesting word, btw. It makes me think of a cross between “entrails” and “crawling.”

I’m not grasping the whole idea of the Today I Feel.. picture. Why do all those women have the exact same expression when they’re all supposed to be feeling something different? Hmm…
I’m with you on the facial expressions. I have a much more convincing disgusted face.
Maybe she really meant they were traveling about selling their wares?
My 3rd grade teacher once gave us a spelling list and one of the entries was “poison ivory.” She wouldn’t believe me that it was wrong.
My kids’ fear of poison ivory has severely inhibited their piano practice time.

I just started typing a list of the mistakes I have heard my children’s teachers make this year. But I got so paranoid that, in doing so, I would make a mistake myself, that I stopped. (It’s not that I don’t notice or even catalogue them in my head. I’ve just decided it might be safer to keep them there.)
I was pretty paranoid I would have a mistake in this post. There probably is one somewhere. Feel free to point them out, btw. I like to make corrections.
I don’t get the office thing, I missed the entrawling, and I don’t see what’s wrong with the story start. I did catch the schedual thing though!
It’s feisty, not fiesty; enthralling, not entrawling; pedalled (or pedaled), not peddled.
I assumed that there was a spelling error but I didn’t find it until you pointed it out. I think I spell pretty good but that whole “i before e, except after c” thing confuses me too much. Why is it Feisty and not Fiesty?
I guess for the same reason it’s heist and not hiest? Fiesty sounds like you want to party. In Mexico.
I did catch the enthralling and pedaled thing though.
Wow…I swear I looked at that picture 723 times and did not catch that spelling error. And I consider myself a decent speller. Above average, even.
I did notice the other errors, but the Office picture completely stumped me and therefore the confusion with the entire post.
I have noticed on friends’ who also happen to be teachers blogs an abundance of grammatical and spelling errors. It does pain me some. But I start sentences with but and and, so who am I to judge another. Well, except when another laminates the idiocy on the classroom wall. Then I can judge. Grammatically. And otherwise.
I was lost on the Office picture too. Those i before e’ get me a lot.
Oh, and I’m still stumped on the action story thing. Help?

Maybe they were selling cr** — I mean lovely, tasteful Christmas gifts for the school fundraiser and were in a hurry to meet their class quota for the pizza party.
Pedaled. I get it. I was too busy trying to figure out why that wasn’t an action story start. Thank you for enlightening me. And feisty really should be spelled fiesty — it’s “I before E except after C and words sounding in EIGH like NEIGHBOR and WEIGH.” At least, that’s what I was taught. So should we be pronouncing feisty as faystee? This is why I am completely shocked that any child or non-native English speaker ever learns to read or write. What i the world coming to?
I love that my comment has a spelling error. And that I italicized it.
I assumed you did that on purpose. You know, for the effect. 😉
And the beauty of grammar is all those exceptions to the rules, don’t you know.
