I left this voicemail last night for someone I work with at church (this was the first time I had ever called her):

I was having a thought about our activity and wanted to get your thoughts on my thought, which you don’t know yet because you’re not home, which is why I’m leaving this message.  *nervous laughter* I hate answering machines! *nervous laughter*  Anyway, could you please call me when you get a chance?  OKthanksbye.

Why do I turn into a blathering idiot on the phone?  I suspect I am frequently a blathering idiot in person, but at least that’s not recorded.  Fully justified phone phobia!  Sigh.

Anything turn you into a blathering idiot?  Any justified phobias?

Huge phone phobia here. I never answer the phone if I don’t know who it is—and even then I’ll sometimes let the machine get it.

    There’s a reason I don’t have a cell phone!

I’m horrible on answering machines, too.

I don’t mind answering the phone, but I hate calling people — even people I know would love for me to call. I looked it up, and the official term for it is telephobia. Since I don’t mind answering the phone, and I can make myself call people when I have to, I’m thinking I have a mild case.

Oh, and if I had gotten a message like yours on my voicemail, I would’ve found it charming.

I’ve received messages from you like that, and to steal food4luv’s wording, they were indeed charming.

I turn into a blathering idiot on answering machines, cold-calling any professional service of any kind (insurance companies, credit card companies, doctor’s offices, making visiting teaching appointment), talking to random friends, greeting people at church, asking questions in a store, etc. You name it, I sound like an idiot.

Hey! We should be friends! 😉

You don’t sound like a blathering idiot. I love it! Honestly, it’s very YOU. Funny, charming, all of that. Just like your blog posts.

P.S. Now I want you to call me. And I think I want to screen calls just to get a message from you.

I’m the same way. Most of the time I plan out what I’m going to say so I don’t make a fool of myself. I loved the message though!

Hate answering the phone, as well! And, well, I’m pretty sure it’s just LIFE that turns me into a blathering idiot…

Ditto. I’m calling people for choir right now and making a total fool of myself over and over again. Thanks for the timely reassurance that I’m not alone…

You all are very sweet, and it is quite comforting to know I am not alone.

The gal I called (I don’t know when I started saying “gal”. I remember my mom used to say “gal” and I used to think she sounded soooo old saying “gal”. But I feel like I’m too old to say “girl” and “lady” just kind of sounds rude and “woman” creeps me out for some reason.) returned my call and left this message:

Hmmm…So you call me, but then you don’t answer ’cause you know it’s me calling you because you want me to call you to find out what you’re thinking, but I don’t know what you’re thinking because I’m talking to your answering machine. OK, I’m home now. Talktoyousoonbye.

Yeah, we’re going to get along just fine.

Your voicemail sounds a lot like all of my voicemails, but yours was blissfully much shorter than most of mine are.

However, I actually prefer leaving a message to talking to a live person because at least on the voicemail I know that I’m not going to get a response, whereas with a live person I keep expecting a response and not getting one because the person on the other end is just thinking, “What the h*** are you talking about?”

Um yes, hate the leaving of messages. It’s always worse when I don’t really know the person that well and am trying to leave a good impression. What they get is a blathering idiot on the other end of the phone that they may or may not call back. sigh…

  14. tawnya February 25, 2010 at 5:25 pm #

Hence why Lora and I set up anything we do via email…

We’ve discussed this in person (and on the phone as well, probably) so I’m going to skip that and just say that I love you, you crack me up.

I am the SAME way! I go on for entirely too long, then get cut off, making me even MORE anxious about leaving a long, blabbering message. If given the option, I usually re-record, trying my hardest to not sound like a chipmunk on crack as I leave all the necessary info before that dreaded beep…

    • bythelbs March 1, 2010 at 1:59 pm #

I never re-record. I’m always afraid that the machine will somehow not record over the first message I left and then there will be multiple evidence of my idiocy!
