Anyone else think Bob Costas is the new Dick Clark? And other Olympics-related thoughts.

26 Feb

*Seriously, does this guy age?

Now:

THIRTY years ago:

*The Canadian Women’s Hockey Team?  ClassyI don’t begrudge them their win, though.  And it seems somewhat fitting for the sport, no?

*They really should have the Women’s Snowboard Halfpipe Finals before the Men’s.  It’s really hard to get excited about the women’s runs after seeing the men’s.  Very anti-climactic.

*The uniforms are almost enough to tempt me to try out for Norway’s Men’s Olympic Curling Team.

But maybe I’ll just have to settle for the fanwear:

*What makes someone wake up one morning and decide they want to be a professional lugist?

*Ice dancing frightens me.

*Watching the Olympics makes me very tense.  I don’t like seeing anyone mess up, regardless of what country they are representing.   And mistakes like the one made by the Dutch speed skating coach that cost that athlete the gold make me wish there were such a thing as cosmic do-overs.  Come on, it wasn’t his fault!  Can’t you just give him the medal anyway?

*Speaking of wishing for cosmic do-overs, I think the most distressing memory I’ll take away from these Olympic games is the We Are The World remake I saw before the opening ceremonies.  I know it’s for a good cause, but some things just need to be left alone!

Seriously, how can you improve on this?

What’s been your favorite/least favorite part of these games?

I hate the olympics. Never watch them!

I haven’t watched the Olympics at all, so I don’t have a favorite part. I did enjoy your curling-related pictures, though.

I don’t like watching the Olympics for the reasons you mentioned–very stressful for me to watch people mess up, or watch knowing that any second they could mess up. I’ve expounded on this elsewhere, on many other blogs discussing the Olympics, so I won’t bore you with it here.

That new We Are the World is just messed up beyond reason. It’s unlistenable. Plus, I don’t know any of those people. Plus, the ghost Michael Jackson bit is creepy. Plus, We Are the World WITHOUT Huey Lewis? Just wrong.

    We think Costas uses Botox.

Agreed on the women’s snowboarding. Shaun White is SO fun to watch (and in interviews).

We’ve really enjoyed figure skating, too. I really got wrapped up in the story about the Canadian figure skater. I get so choked up during the Olympics.

I don’t know how I got to be this age without realizing that Ice Dancing is an Olympic sport. I watched it for the first time this year…and it is a bit creepy.

I don’t think they will let you onto the men’s curling team 🙂 But that hat is AWESOME!!!!

My favorite event is women’s alpine ski-ing. I don’t know why, but I really don’t like the men’s as much as the women’s. I think it’s because I can follow Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso in more than one race.

Those ice dancing costumes were really weird. And the weirdest part is, they’ve worn those costumes before, and the Australians got really offended (cuz those were supposed t be aboriginal costumes), but they wore them again, anyways! Why would they wanna do that? Maybe they just don’t like Australians…

I think I like the Winter Olympics better than the Summer ones 🙂
‘Cept for curling. Can you say SNOOZE fest?

Shaz—I totally get that. I don’t really consider myself a sports fan even, but for some reason I feel compelled to watch at least parts of the olympics.

Mad—The new WATW baffles and angers me. Well, angers might be a little strong. Most seriously displeases me?

Boquinha—Whatever Bob’s doing, it’s working for him. Although, I’m a little concerned he might have a portrait of his aging self hanging out in an attic somewhere…

Mother—I just can’t get into the ice dancing. It’s kind of like the rhythmic gymnastics of the summer games for me.

Migillicutty—I thought the costumes for the Russian’s last dance were pretty creepy, too, but I couldn’t find a good picture of it. There were all of these faces on the skin-toned inserts in the costume. WEE-YURD.

I heard about that ice dance routine (ice dance?) and heard about the controversy but I found the one I did watch plenty disturbing. (The brother and sister dressed up like a trucker and a skank (complete with tramp stamp) skating around like… well, it wasn’t pretty. (But it was plenty creepy.)

In confess, having no tv in the house has really cramped my ability to dive into the Olympics. I feel as if a part of my life is empty and hollow knowing that I can’t see the flamboyant costumes of the figure skaters (and apparently the curling teams as well.. who knew!) or beer guzzing, cigar-smoking women as they perform their victory rites in primeval fashion. Sigh. Drink it all in my friend, drink it all in.

I’ve been loving the Olympics, but I’ll be happy when they are done. And seriously, what IS up with Bob Costas? He does look exactly the same! And totally agree with the “We Are the World” remake. That thing was a disaster!

I just typed my comment and hit the wrong button and it disappeared. ARG!

I agree with you on the half-pipe and I had the exact same thought.

What I can’t figure out is why I like the 4-man bobsledding but can’t get into the 2-man bobsledding.

I’ve been watching the speedskating, some of the skiing and a couple other things. I record the five hours at night and watch the next day – with out commercials and Bob, it gets done in like an hour and half!

  11. boquinha February 28, 2010 at 2:22 pm #

Yes, TiVo is the only way to watch the Olympics!!

And did you see the SNL skit yesterday that seriously referred to the “We Are the World” remake as a disaster? SO funny.

  12. tawnya February 28, 2010 at 4:02 pm #

My least favorite is that they even exist and mess up my tv watching enjoyment!

  13. MaryAnn March 1, 2010 at 1:43 pm #

LOL at the Bob Costas photos – WOW!!! I agree with boquina about the Botox – nobody looks that good, especially in HD!

I am with you on the We Are the World – that was TERRIBLE! I was looking forward to the makeover, with the new tallent and the cause being a good one and all, etc. but it just sucked! We are still laughing at the rapping in the middle…I also wasn’t feelin’ the warm fuzzies with MJ singing the chorus – that was just creepy…

    • bythelbs March 1, 2010 at 2:02 pm #

I think you guys are right, Costas must have a little Botox action going on.

The rapping in the middle was ridiculous and I thought it was in really poor taste to try to include the deceased MJ.

Alison—I missed that one! Think I can find it on youtube?

Lora—No TV??? You are very wise. And also nuts. But mostly wise.

    Flip—I know!

Amanda—I hate it when that happens! I was only smart enough to DVR like one thing. The other things I happened to catch, I watched live. It’s torturous watching things live once you’ve DVR’d. Torturous!

Boquinha—I missed that skit. I’ll have to look for it.

Tawnya—That’s the same reason I resent things like the state of the union address.

    • tawnya March 1, 2010 at 4:37 pm #

I get that. And I’m even crazy political and I hate it when the state of the union messes with a good tv night. I KNOW the state of the union. I read the news…gimme chuck!
