Let’s dance

11 Mar

Earlier this week, Susan M asked for a song that makes you want to get up and dance.  I went through my iTunes library, but had a really difficult time choosing.  My first instinct was to head to the 80s music, since sadly that is where almost all my dancing memories lie.  This initial search has sent me on a journey down music memory lane the past couple of days, which has been really, really fun.

There’s an entire post waiting to be written here, but I only have a couple of minutes before I’ve reached the absolute bare minimum of time needed to get myself ready for BigHugs’ gymnastics class.  So I’m just going to tell you about this one thing really quickly and then I’ll have to get back to the rest of it later.

Last night I was showing Mr. T and DynaGirl a bunch of these songs and their original videos on youtube.  Oh, the 80s music video.  Is there anything else quite like it?  Somehow our meandering youtube navigations brought us to this Peter Murphy classic, Cuts You Up.

Mr. T and DynaGirl’s reaction to the video:

Mr. T: This is like Rick Astley meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

DynaGirl: With a Draco Malfoy makeover.

I love my kids.

And this song.

P.S. In the end, I went with Jamiroquai’s Canned Heat for Susan’s dance mix.  What would you have picked?

I was just thinking of this song the other day! Spooky.

I love this song so very, very, very much. Always reminds me of going to the dance club in college.

Most songs make me want to dance. I have a significant amount of boogie in my butt, but I will go with It Takes Two. Cannot resist that song

    Your kids are awesome.

    This was my contribution:

“If you wanna do it, do it right…”

Your kids have their very own brand of trademarked awesome. I love them.

Your kids are so great. You’re doing a great job — way to go. Every child should be well versed in the wonders of 80s music and movies. We’ve been watching The Goonies and Karate Kid. Great stuff.

The other day, Mark and I were listening to “You Can Call Me Al” on the radio and we got to commenting on how THAT was such an awesome video and how they don’t make videos like they used to.

    I heart the 80s.

Man I love that song. I had a hard time with this because EVERYTHING makes me want to dance. So I just closed my eyes and randomly picked one. And then picked another!

Mad—The video makes it double spooky! And where’s your get up and dance song?

Shaz—It Takes Two is a favorite of mine as well. I actually wrote another post a couple of years ago that talks about It Takes Two AND Cuts You Up.

Susan—I have a whole new appreciation for the song after seeing that video.

Julie—Thank you. But what’s your get up and dance song??

Boquinha—Have you seen the previews for the new Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith? Sacrilege!

Tawnya—It was a very hard choice.

Old Dominion by Eddie From Ohio.

And the entire Will Smith album “Big Willie Style”
    And most Justin Timberlake songs.
And Madonna’s “Ray of Light” album.

    And well, Hoedown Throwdown.”

Basically, I love most songs and they almost always make me want to dance.

    Alison—Move ’em, baby.

Julie—Thanks for the list! Hoedown Throwdown? What’s that?

“Footloose.” It is my go-to dance song. You can’t listen to it and not want to set those feet fancy-free.

Oh, Lbs, it’s an even better Miley Cyrus song than Party in the USA. Seriously. It’s from the Hannah Montana movie and it’s capital A – Awesome.

That’s a great song. Eighties music rocks.

Also, just about every Michael Jackson song ever. I found myself dancing while I was cleaning to The Way You Make Me Feel this morning.
