Girls wearing glasses

21 Jan

Goose is now bespectacled.  It was only a matter of time really.  Her father is legally blind sans lenses—he has to have his nose up against the poster to see the big E—and Mr. T and DynaGirl are also in corrective lenses.  She’s a bit younger than the older two were when they got their first pair, which makes me a little concerned about the path her eyes are going down.

It seems like it used to be that kids didn’t want glasses for fear of teasing and being pegged “the nerd”.  Tis not the case with Goose.  She could not be more excited.  I’m sure the whole “I can see!” thing is part of it, but she just thinks it’s really cool that she gets to wear glasses now.  When we finished with her eye appointment last week and the doctor informed her that she did indeed need glasses, she was beaming.  She took a full hour to pick out frames.  She tried on just about every pair, and had the poor woman who was helping us look up every possible color for every style she tried on.  She finally settled on a pair of metallic bubblegum pink, wire-rimmed, rectangular-shaped frames.  They weren’t my favorites, but she fell in love.  And I have to admit, she looks pretty darn cute.

Last night, on our way to pick them up, I asked if her friends at school knew about her glasses.

Me:  Did you tell B you’re getting glasses?

Goose:  Yeah.

Me:  What did he say?

Goose:  You don’t want to know.

Me:  What did he say?

Goose:  Well, it’s because he likes me.

Me:  Yeah…

Goose:  He said, “Oh, you’re going to look real hot in glasses!”

Maybe men don’t make passes at girls wearing glasses, but apparently first grade boys do.  While I’m not overly excited about the idea of my first grader being thought of as “hot”, I’m grateful that Goose has supportive friends that won’t rain on her “Yay for my glasses!” parade.

So funny, although I’d probably cringe a bit at the “hot” comment too. Oh well, at least glasses don’t seem to be thought of as nerdy anymore.

“Red hot” is WAY better than just “hot,” though, you gotta admit. There’s something really funny about that.

I’d love to see the frames, they sound really cute.

I wonder if having older sibs with glasses adds to her desire for them? It’s always cool to be like the big kids.

That’s too funny! I’m glad she has a friend who will think she’s cute! I agree though that glasses aren’t too “nerdy” anymore. There was one Sunbeam I had last year that got glasses and she looks just darling and loves her glasses!

“You’re going to look real hot in glasses.”

Part creepy, part LOL. Or at least COL.

I think glasses are hot. Which reminds me, I need to see the optometrist again. I’m on my way to becoming legally blind myself.

🙂 I remember my youngest sister actually going out and buying herself ‘fake’ (ie, non-corrective) glasses when she was in elementary school, just because she wanted to wear them. Now that’s she’s older (teenager) she HAS to wear them – and we got a kick out of teasing her about that one!

Funny how things change, isn’t it? I couldn’t WAIT to be allowed to have contact lenses as a teen, because I hated my glasses so much…

I think Goose is about the same age BratzBasher was when she got her glasses. Of course, BB’s myopia was inevitable (coming from both parents), but she looks adorable in her glasses, too.

Message for Goose: Don’t worry about anyone calling you “four-eyes” or other names because that never happened to me, or my friend who has glasses.

the Princess wants glasses too. She insisted that she couldn’t see so I took her to the eye doctor with me last summer. She was super bummed that she didn’t need correction. I was pretty excited about it, keeping myself in glasses is spendy enough.

I’m the only kid in my family who hasn’t needed glasses. Yet I’m the diabetic who will probably end up blind.

Only my daughter needs them. My husband doesn’t, although I think everyone else in his family does.

patience—A simultaneous cringe and chuckle for me.

Julie—I’m sure sibling glasses envy was part of it. Now if BigHugs doesn’t end up needing glasses, she will feel very left out.

flip—I think that it helps that they have so many cute frames nowadays.

woob—Mr. T is actually lobbying for contacts now. We’ll probably look into it next eye appt.

foofer—Yeah, I was hoping that at least one of our kids would get my vision perfection. BigHugs is our last hope, but it’s a very small hope now.

BB—Thanks for the reassurance. Goose is very excited about her glasses, which is fun to see.

Alison—Tell me about it! Glasses are spendy!

Mother—Yeah, it’s totally fun to see her so proud of her new accessory.

Susan—It’s funny how the DNA thing works. Seems like such a crapshoot sometimes.
